Tour Book Entry #4
7/10/04 - Day 2
Saturday, another beautiful sunny day at Red Rocks. String Cheese closes the
show tonight so the Allman Brothers fans take control of the seats early in the
afternoon. Once again New Earth Mud opened the show, this time we stuck
around for their entire set.

Although they were a little too vocal oriented when they stretched out in their jams they kept my attention focused on the music. I expect good things them to become rising stars on the jam band scene.

The Allman Brothers took the stage while the sun was still shining and opened up with an energetic Revival where the people could truly feel that love was in the air!

I enjoyed today's ABB set more than the night before, they seemed to have more energy right from the opening notes and greater intensity during their jams especially when the guests took the stage with them. The highlights of their set for me were Its Not My Cross To Bear, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, and the closing power trio of their classics Statesboro Blues, Dreams and Liz Reed!

Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes play like they are of one mind, passing the leads back and forth effortlessly and then combining into that signature Allman Brother harmonic guitar sound where they play note for note.

Derek has a very quiet reserved presence on stage but speaks volumes with his guitar! Listening to him play in this band makes you wonder if he really is the reincarnation of Duane?

String Cheese had their work cut out for them to top the Allman Brothers set so they enlisted their help. After opening with Black Clouds, one of my favorites This Must Be The Place, the Keller Williams classic It Is What It Is and the fairly new Sirens we were treated to what was in my opinion the best jam of the weekend. With Derek, Otiel and Marc Quinones from the Brothers joining the stage they launched into an epic cover of John Coltrane's Impressions.

If Impressions wasn't enough to satisfy the faithful, Warren Haynes joined the crowded stage and lead the way on a tasty cover of Hey Pocky Way. Throughout the weekend it was amazing to watch Warren, Derek and Michael Kang jam together, never stepping on each other while seamlessly passing the lead around the circle. Seeing these two bands together was certainly a treat even if at times it seemed like a clash of cultures between the fans.

Unfortunately I was too tired to fight the crowd in front of the stage during String Cheese's set so my pictures are only from Row 28 and none of them turned out that great. On a clear and calm night at Red Rocks, I don't think there's a bad seat in the house acoustically so I was quite content to sit back and enjoy the music.

Allison & Pattie |
Patina & Uncle Bob |
The biggest surprise of the weekend was finally getting to meet our Juggling Suns sister Allison from Boulder! She saw Pattie walking through the crowd and recognized her from pictures on our web site. We were thrilled to finally meet her and had lots to chat about since Allison and her friend Emmy are responsible for putting on a benefit festival in Boulder this September that was the impetus for bring Juggling Suns out west for a two week tour. It was great to meet a fellow east coast transplant and stoke our enthusiasm for the upcoming tour. We're looking forward to meeting the rest of the family and spending a weekend in Boulder jamming with Juggs!
