7/9/04 - Day 1

Day 2 - Tour Book Entry #4

Our second visit to Red Rocks was to see the unusual combination of the The Allman Brothers Band and String Cheese Incident.  I didn't know what to expect at these shows. We've seen the Allmans many times over the years and despite a great admiration of Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes filling the Dickie Betts void we recently decided their biker, boozing, testosterone driven crowd wasn't much fun anymore.  String Cheese is our latest discovery going back to our first Incident at the Pocono Gathering on the Mountain on August 6, 2000. They quickly jumped onto our go see list, and they hold the special position of my one and only Radio City Music Hall concert on July 20, 2002!

New Earth Mud was the opening band for both days.  I had never heard them before but I was familiar with Chris Robinson from his Black Crowes days and Rob Barraco from his tours with Phil & Friends and the The Other Ones.  They opened with a rocking instrumental version of Hard To Handle that segued into an original composition.  The sun was too hot to handle so we headed to the cool air conditioned Visitors Center.  We got back to our seats just in time for their last song and judging from the crowd response they were well received.

String Cheese came on next and played about 2 hours.  They opened with a crowd pleasing Shine and played several unfamiliar songs from their new CD, the most appropriate being Look At Where We Are!

The band really hit their stride during the jazzy Birdland and kept up the pace right through the Rollover closer to the delight of the CheeseHeads dancing in the seats.

Once again we lucked out and it didn't rain on us but off in the surrounding hills there were storms which lead to appearance of this rainbow!  One other interesting sight was this guy demonstrating a new market for patchwork skirt - not on my bones!!!

The craziest sight of the weekend had to be these kids sitting up in the middle of Creation Rock. Apparently there is a tunnel through there that is accessible from the other side.  From what I've heard people have died falling off and if you get caught you're looking at a big fine and jail time.

The Allman Brothers closed the Friday night show and it was very interesting to see their fans coming in late and encountering all the CheeseHeads in their seats. Pattie even saw one guy slug some kid in an argument - that's a first!  There were definitely two distinct vibes during the sets, one kind, the other aggressive.

There were plenty of collaborations between the bands. Warren Haynes sat in for String Cheese's encore.  Rob Barraco and Kyle Lang came out for a cover of Franklin's Tower where Derek Trucks played the best solo during a Dead song that I heard during all the Red Rocks shows this summer! That was one of the highlights of their set along with a kick ass version of Southbound which also featured guest performers.  After a solid 2 hour set they stepped up anther level for their encore featuring a cover of Coltrane's Afro Blue into an always pleasing Mountain Jam and finally the crowd favorite and traditional closer of Whipping Post!

Here's a short video clip of a Warren jamming with String Cheese MLT (4.2MB)
