Falls Creek Trail
Chugach State Park - Anchorage, Alaska

'Morning comes, she follows the path to the river shore...'
[Let It Grow - Grateful Dead]

The road from Anchorage to Seward follows the Cook Inlet and provides access to the Chugach State Park. There are more pullouts for trail access than there are turn offs for other roads to towns. We drove this road several times and kept passing by the trails because we were headed to other destinations. Finally one day, we drove down the highway and stopped at several locations for a few easy hikes.

This is the bottom of Falls Creek, the largest waterfalls we could see from the highway. Our tour book said it was a mile and a half trail so we decided to start the morning off with a nice leisurely hike.

Pattie forgot to mention that the trail was rated strenuous and more importantly that it was partially unmaintained. The first mile was almost straight up, following the falls, then the trail began to disappear but I could still see an overgrown path to climb higher. I'm an old boy scout, ex-Marine Corps grunt and I love to trudge around in the woods. Pattie is a real trooper who follows me almost everywhere I lead! Eventually we had to turn around and head back down the trail which was much more difficult considering that it had been raining overnight. We made it back fine as always, but Pattie insisted that we had to go buy Shout before going back to our apartment so she could get the mud out of our clothes.
