Aialik Glacier - Kenai Fjords National Park

As much as I wanted to see bears in Alaska, Pattie wanted to see glacier calving. After a 3 hour cruise through Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords we arrived at the Aialik glacier.

We pulled up within a quarter mile of the glacier and stayed there for about a half hour. The entire time we were there you could here explosions coming from all directions like dueling banjos. Occasionally a big bang would be followed by huge chunks of ice breaking off and falling into the water, creating waves in the water and scattering the birds.

This center section of the glacier eventually generated the largest calving during our visit. Unfortunately, I was in the process of changing memory cards and missed the shot.

This is the right side of the glacier in the process of calving. You can see the ice chunks and dust falling in the center of the picture.
