Exit Glacier - Kenai Fjords National Park

'Up on a mountain it'll slow me down
Listen to the rhythm from the ground...'
[Spin Song - Juggling Suns]

There is one glacier that is accessable by land within the Kenai Fjords National Park called Exit glacier. Driving into the park you see this view of the glacier that from afar looks like you could strap on your skis and make a thrilling downhill run.

Where the park road ends, you can take a half mile hike right out to the glacier ice. At first, its a bit intimidating because the ice is so huge and you can actually hear sounds coming from it, but you can't resist walking up to it... how many times will you ever get to sit on a glacier? You can even see the dirt being forced forward into mounds in front of the glacier.

Up close the glacier looks entirely different than the first view from the road. Its bigger than you can imagine and looks like a giant blue snow cone. You also realize there is no way you could ever ski, ice climbing maybe, if you were fearless!

This close-up shot removes the snow illusion and shows you the ice pack. It reminds me of when a bag of ice starts melting and turns into a big block.
