If you ever see a documentary about Katmai, the classic scene is a bear standing at the top of Brooks Falls catching salmon as the salmon attempt to jump up the falls. Unfortunately, this happens in July during the peak of the salmon spawning season. We were lucky enough to find this bear still hanging out there... he's named SnaggleTooth because of a tooth protruding from his mouth. The bear biologist who told us his name, estimated his weight around 900 - 1000 pounds!

SnaggleTooth is a very patient hunter. I stood on the platform for over 15 minutes trying to capture a video clip of him making a catch but was only able to get this single picture of him diving in unsuccessfully. We later learned that he is also particular about what he eats, preferring the more unusual silver salmon instead of the predominant red salmon.
